What happened technically to OceanGate Submersible ?

The OceanGate Titan submersible suffered a catastrophic implosion on June 18, 2023, during a dive to the Titanic shipwreck. All five passengers on board were killed. The debris of the submersible was found on the sea floor, around 500 meters away from the bow of the Titanic.

The US Coast Guard concluded that the implosion was caused by a failure of the carbon fiber mid-section of the submersible. This section was designed to distribute the immense pressure of the deep ocean evenly around the passenger compartment, but it was not strong enough to withstand the pressure at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) below sea level.

The cause of the failure of the carbon fiber mid-section is still under investigation. However, it is possible that the failure was caused by a manufacturing defect, or by the submersible being subjected to excessive pressure during the dive.

The loss of the OceanGate Titan submersible is a tragic reminder of the dangers of deep-sea exploration. However, it is also a testament to the bravery and dedication of the people who lost their lives on that day. They were pioneers in the field of deep-sea exploration, and their work will help to pave the way for future generations of explorers.
